Biography

Alfiya is an ocean and environmental modeller interested in how marine ecosystems respond to climate variability and change. Her work combines high-resolution physical-biogeochemical models, satellite and reanalysis products, and statistical / machine-learning methods to study circulation, nutrient dynamics, primary productivity, and marine extremes such as heatwaves. She enjoys working at the interface of models and observations, using large Earth system and climate datasets to uncover patterns that matter for ecosystems and society. While much of Alfiya's research has focused on the Arabian Gulf and surrounding seas, she is increasingly interested in global scale questions linking ocean biogeochemistry, living resources, and food security.

At the integrated reef fisheries lab, Alfiya will analyse global datasets of nutrient composition in aquatic foods together with satellite Earth observation and ocean reanalysis products. She will explore how nutrient profiles vary across space and time and how this variability is shaped by environmental and biogeochemical drivers such as temperature, salinity, nutrient availability, and mixed-layer dynamics. The goal is to develop predictive models and global maps of key macro- and micronutrients in aquatic foods, providing a framework to assess how changing ocean conditions may affect the nutritional contributions of aquatic foods to human diets.
