Biography

Fernando Rodriguez is a mathematician and statistician currently working as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from KAUST and a Master of Science in Mathematics from the National University of Colombia in Bogotá.

His research focuses on Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal modeling, with applications in public health, environmental sciences, disease spread, and air pollution. His work involves the development and application of statistical models for complex data that vary across space and time, including point patterns, areal data, and aggregated environmental observations. He is particularly interested in using computational methods to estimate risk, predict environmental and health-related processes, quantify uncertainty, and translate statistical results into meaningful insights for real-world decision-making.

In the Integrated Reef Fisheries Lab, Fernando focuses on developing statistical methods to better understand marine socio-ecological systems and the contribution of aquatic foods  to human health. For example, he works on developing statistical approaches to quantify and propagate uncertainty across ecological,  fisheries and nutrition data. His current project focuses on reef fish biomass estimation, particularly how uncertainty and missing information in length-weight conversion parameters can affect biomass estimates and the conclusions drawn from them.
