Hiba Nasir is a geoinformatics engineer, environmental scientist and incoming Visiting Researcher in the Integrated Reef Fisheries Lab within the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). She holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Geoinformatics Engineering from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan, and a Masters in Environmental Science: Climate Change Impact and Adaptations from the University of Toronto, Canada. She has a background in geospatial analysis, remote sensing, spatial and climate data science and automation pipelines.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of spatial data science, ecological informatics, and environmental modelling. She is particularly interested in integrating heterogeneous ecological datasets to better understand ecosystem structure and function, using quantitative and computational approaches to address challenges in biodiversity conservation, climate change, and sustainable ecosystem management.
In the Integrated Reef Fisheries Lab, Hiba's research focuses on developing a trait-based assessment of the functional structure of Red Sea marine communities. Her project involves compiling and harmonizing ecological information for Red Sea fish and invertebrate species from sources including FishBase, SeaLifeBase, and regional datasets. This includes species distributions, habitat associations, trophic roles, ecological traits, and climate-related information to create a unified ecological framework for ecosystem analysis.
