Biography

Dr. Milisa Talas is a Research Specialist at the Integrated Reef Ecology Lab at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Her path to marine science is anything but conventional, beginning with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Banja Luka and a Master's in Environmental and Geomatic Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, before pivoting fully to the ocean with a Master's in Marine Science from KAUST and a PhD in Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Algarve. This cross-disciplinary training, spanning engineering, geospatial analysis, and marine biology, equips her with a versatile toolkit for tackling complex environmental questions. Her doctoral research focused on the impacts of climate change on fisheries and marine conservation, exploring how shifting ocean conditions threaten the ecosystems and communities that depend on them. At the Integrated Reef Ecology Lab, Milisa contributes to scientific research, supports lab operations, and helps build the digital infrastructure that makes the lab's work accessible to the wider community. Her broad skill set and hands-on approach make her an integral part of the team across both the science and the day-to-day running of the lab.
